No Victors in the War on Dissent
The presence of armor-clad police officers at political demonstrations is a visible manifestation of the fascist threat, indicative that the "war on terror" has morphed into a "war on dissent".

In June, 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling on the Second Amendment right to bear arms, D.C. v. Heller. So far, the victory hasn't turned out exactly as the gun rights folks had hoped.
I implored Arabs to shop at stores that can help you dress "white" like Banana Republic -- the Mecca of clothing for white people. But now I'm here to tell everyone to ignore that advice in light of today's news.
After posting what I felt was quite a tame piece about being a lesbian mom, my post became the hottest thing on nj.com -- the overwhelming majority of comments were not supportive. Very not.
Repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell has been floated as one opportunity for Obama, but I encourage the new President to try frying a bigger fish -- the Defense of Marriage Act.
Killing lots of people on the other side is not only ineffective, it is counterproductive. It hurts your cause. It gets more of your own people killed in the long run. Israel, you are so better than this.
There are a number of reasons Springsteen's move to sell exclusively through the mega-retailer is, um, really confusing, if not downright contradictory to the Springsteen hagiography.
Although Prop 8 wasn't exactly a remake of Prop 6, it's the same disaster movie storyline pitch: any recognition of constitutional rights for gay and lesbian citizens will somehow destroy the natural order.
Last Friday, at the height of the attacks, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak announced without a hint of irony: "We are peace seekers."
Maybe it's not so much Rick Warren I should be directing my protests toward as all the gays and lesbians who titter at the very serious idea of equality.
For too many years Americans have fought against things: communism, drugs, poverty. Isn't it time to fight for something?
Cross posted from Salon's Broadsheet For all the ink that's been spilled on the Madoff investment scandal, I've read nothing about its impact on fund...
The Rick Warrens of the world pretend that the Bible says marriage is between a man and a woman. But the Bible is full of men taking on second wives, prostitutes and concubines. And all the while, God heartily approves.
You can't have a neighbor continuously lobbing missiles into your back yard. There is an age-old right to self-defense. Even essentially pacifist and non-violent Buddhism does not deny this right.
As Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir boasted, "Just when some countries gave us sanctions, God gave us oil." It's expensive to wage genocide.
So, to my fellow LGBT friends and our straight allies -- let's use the Rick Warren choice as an opportunity to be impatient. I for one plan to be impatient constructively.

Police or military are just the biggest gangs of thugs with guns.
This is a heinous crime, no different than what a serial killer would carry out. Deliberate killing of someone for any reason they want.
While I have a great deal of respect for law enforcement and what they have to put up with on a daily basis, I have to remind everyone that this type of tragedy will keep occuring so long as the police adopt the mentality that "it's us vs them" and then go on to treat everyone as guilty until proven innocent.
I think it's been shown that if you give someone a disproportionate amount of power over other people, they will abuse it, and in many many instances, both small and large, many of us have had these kinds of dealings with police--definitely not to this degree, but the same type of belligerence and arrogance that police routinely display, for instance, on that "Cops" show. Just recently I had to go to court, and the cop who pulled me over deliberately omitted some very important facts about the incident. It was my word against his, and I had to pay a large fine. It's obviously not nearly as serious, but it speaks to a recognizable pattern within "law enforcement." Too much power given to those with too much ego and very little compassion leads to corruption.
THe key quote in this article is, "My response now to anyone who shares these sentiments is to seek education as high as required to give you the foundation to seek a job or a business opportunity that will extract you from tyranny. " If we could only get THIS message across to young kids!
